His Story
Through the intimate experience of relating and sharing people's lives, pains, hopes, fears, struggles, and dreams together, his amassed knowledge and journey have naturally brought him to his next chapter on his personal journey home. Dr. AbdulAziz believes deeply in the healing and transformative nature of collective and relational healing, espousing these values across his client work and in his personal life with his loved ones. It is in this deeply embedded set of beliefs and values, tied firmly with the Islamic tradition and teachings, that he wishes to inspire and aid his community as they begin and discover their own journey home.
Dr. AbdulAziz's path into this work was shaped by both personal journey and firsthand experience witnessing the beauty of collaborative community and relational care. He is deeply passionate about the decolonization and reindigienization of mental health and wellness — moving away from purely Eurocentric models toward frameworks that have been used for thousands of years, rooted in the Islamic tradition and other indigenous ways of knowing and healing.
Central to his vision is the need to create systems of support rather than working with people only individually. He has always sought to maximize his impact on the community and extend the benefits of healing beyond the therapy room. Despite the growing popularity of therapy, mental health outcomes across the broader population have continued to worsen — a signal, he believes, that we need to fundamentally change our approach and meet people where they are, as communities, not just as individuals.
Having worked extensively with men struggling with sexual compulsive behaviors and pornography, Dr. AbdulAziz witnessed firsthand the difficulty these individuals faced in finding quality, evidence-based treatment. Too often they struggled to face themselves, to invest in their own healing, to find someone willing to take their pain seriously. They were isolated, full of shame — and as he came to understand deeply, addiction thrives in shame and isolation. This awareness pushed him toward a mission: to offer hope, to reach these members of his community who had been quietly suffering, and to remind them that they matter and carry inherent worth regardless of what they've done or where they've been.
His experience as a school counselor and school social worker — in both K-12 settings and higher education — also left a profound mark. He saw the growing disconnection between young people and their parents, and witnessed how much difference could be made by nurturing healthy relationships and creating spaces where students felt genuinely seen. His direct work with both students and parents in one-on-one settings deepened his understanding of how relational wounds form and how relational healing must follow.
You are the expert on your experience, hopes, dreams, and internal world. I am an expert in creating a healing and growing space. Together, you're in the driver's seat, and I am riding next to you as we embark on this journey home.— Dr. AbdulAziz Syed
